In the weeks after the 2015 Nepal earthquake, I was lost — broke, uncertain, and far from peace. One morning, in a monastery outside Kathmandu, I met a monk who would change my life.

We spoke for hours, though it felt like minutes. Before I left, he placed a weathered mala in my hands and said,

“When your mind is loud, sit in silence. Roll each bead and clear your mind. It might take 30 minutes or it might take 2 hours.

But when your mind becomes, the answer will come.”

That single act — that lesson in stillness — became the seed of Backpack Buddha.

Now, ten years later, as the world faces new storms of chaos and uncertainty, I feel called to return to where it all began — and to pass that same gift forward.
